2012 Annual Report
Research: The Key to Advancing Cancer Care Worldwide
Whether it is a scientist working in the lab to discover a new treatment, a clinician looking for ways to improve the care of her patients, or a newly-diagnosed patient searching for information and answers about a complex disease—we support the researcher within all of those whose lives are touched by this terrible disease. Thank you for sharing our vision of a world free from the fear of cancer.
The year 2012 was a signal year for your Conquer Cancer Foundation. During it we supported more than 300 physician-scientists with cancer research grants amounting to more than $6 million. We celebrated 10 years of support for the award-winning, powerful patient information website Cancer.Net. And we laid the groundwork for CancerLinQ, a revolutionary enterprise that will unlock vast quantities of clinical information currently lost to file cabinets and unconnected servers, improving patient care and providing researchers with real-world data.
These accomplishments, and many others, derive from a commitment to conquer cancer. In this report we will highlight our progress on a month-by-month basis. Please review it carefully and we believe that you will also be pardonably proud of the strides taken by your Conquer Cancer Foundation.
Each of these strides has been taken in lockstep with you and your partnership through contribution. None of these achievements would be possible without you.
In 2012 the Conquer Cancer Foundation again received the highest possible rating of four stars from Charity Navigator for organizational capacity, efficiency and transparency. We are honored by the support of each of our benefactors, and continue to work with a singular focus on ensuring that each donation derives the greatest possible impact as together we build a world free from the fear of cancer.
One of us (Marty) retired at the close of 2012 from what has been a life-enriching three years as chair of your Conquer Cancer Foundation Board of Directors. And now we warmly welcome W. Charles Penley, MD, FASCO, our new chair of the Conquer Cancer Foundation. Dr. Penley's leadership is informed by more than 25 years of experience treating people with cancer, as well as many years of service on the Conquer Cancer Foundation Board of Directors and to ASCO. We are honored to have him as our new leader as we continue, with your steadfast and vital partnership, to fulfill our commitment to conquer cancer.
